The new "Jahn-Report" is here: The new issue was published at the beginning of the year, the 59th edition since July 1994. The brochure is an impressive 64 pages long. The first part deals once again with the 100th Jahn gymnastics festival, which took place in Freyburg an der Unstrut in mid-August: reviews from different perspectives illustrate the pleasingly diverse range of events. The new brochure focuses on: the future of the Jahn memorial in Hasenheide, the development of the gymnastics movement in southwest Germany (Gustav von Struve's work), the symposium in Hanau in autumn 2024 (175 years of the DTB) and an appreciation of the fact that sports science has existed in Halle for 100 years.

Friedrich Ludwig Jahn's friends from his Kolberg days in the early 1820s included the master craftsman Ferdinand Meffert and his wife Emilie. In 1835, Jahn became godfather to their second child, son Franz Ludwig. Jahn's letters to the Meffert family, most of which have survived, are an important source for Jahn research today.

Franz Meffert became a teacher, worked as a high school principal in Breslau, was politically active, published several writings and died in Berlin in 1910. The Berlin church music director Kilian Nauhaus, a great-great-grandson of Franz Meffert, will tell about the family friendship between Mefferts and Jahns and draw a life picture of his ancestor Franz Meffert on the basis of letters and documents that are in the surviving family possession. The Freyburg gambist Thomas Fritzsch, cultural ambassador of the city of Köthen and special ambassador of the Burgenlandkreis, with whom Kilian Nauhaus has a long-standing musical collaboration, will provide the musical framework for the evening.

Franz Meffert's contemporaries had the following inscription placed on his grave in Jena, which is still preserved today: "He did right and spared no one". This is the motto of our evening, with which we want to commemorate this striking figure from Jahn's circle.

The event will take place on Friday, August 19, 2022, at 8:00 p.m.

The new "Jahn Report" is here: Shortly before the start of the summer vacations, the new issue of the "Jahn Report" appeared, the 54th installment since July 1994. The brochure is a handsome 60 pages thick and again attractively designed. Under "News", the main topics are a review of the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich and the restoration of the banner of the German Gymnastics Association (DT), which is one of the treasures in the permanent exhibition of the Jahn Museum in Freyburg. Basic articles deal with the history of the Freyburg Jahn Gymnastics Festival, held annually in August, first in 1901; with the almost friendly closeness between the writer and jurist E. T. A. Hoffmann (1776-1822) and F. L. Jahn (1778-1852); and with the question of why mountaineering/mountain hiking/rock climbing is not part of gymnastics but is covered by its own association, the German Alpine Association (DAV). Among the reports are two on sports museums, one on new prospects for the Berlin Sports Museum, the other on the recently closed Sports Museum of Switzerland in Basel. A look back at 1947 reveals a piece of post-war history: The German Gymnastics Working Committee (DAT), founded exactly 75 years ago in Northeim, was the forerunner of the German Gymnastics Federation (DTB), which was founded in Tübingen in 1950. Five book reviews and the entertainingly readable "Notes" round off the richly illustrated brochure.

The Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Gesellschaft e.V. not only wants to provide reliable information about the initiator of the gymnastics movement, but also to contribute to a critical judgment about a German who has been controversial up to the present day. An important basis for the discussion of his life and work are his letters, which, after the first complete edition by Wolfgang Meyer in 1913, are now to be newly edited and published.

The majority of the surviving Jahn letters are now kept in the Privy State Archives of Prussian Cultural Heritage in Berlin, the Central and State Library in Berlin, and the Freyburg Jahn Museum. However, many letters have come into private hands over the course of time, while others lie dormant in the archives of the gymnastics clubs. In the new edition of all Jahn letters, the Jahn Society would like to include these letters as far as possible and therefore asks all owners of original Jahn letters to provide a legible photocopy or a digital copy.
