In the current year, many enquiries have been addressed to the Jahn Museum, which unfortunately could not be processed in the desirable manner due to staff absences due to illness. In the meantime, the staff situation has eased somewhat. Nevertheless, Ms. Dietz, in her capacity as museum director, asks for your understanding that inquiries involving a greater amount of research cannot be answered until further notice, because otherwise the ongoing day-to-day business cannot be managed. In any case, the first thing to do is to clear the "backlog" of work that has accumulated due to illness.

In order to put the future of the Jahn Museum on a solid footing, the museum needs better staffing. We hope to achieve this goal together with the state of Saxony-Anhalt in the not too distant future!

The banner of the German Gymnastics Association donated by Frankfurt women on the occasion of the 5th German Gymnastics Festival in Frankfurt in 1880 is one of the most valuable objects in the museum and therefore requires special care. The Jahn Society has therefore applied to the East German Savings Bank Foundation for funds to restore the flagpole and the monstrance. For exhibition purposes - also outside Freyburg – a replica on a scale of 1:2 is also to be made.

In recent weeks and months, several film teams from various television stations have visited the Jahn Museum to gather material for reports and other features. Politicians such as Norbert Walter-Borjans or Manuela Hartung most recently visited the museum to get an impression of this special institution.

From the liquid assets of the defunct Swiss Sports Museum in Basel, the Jahn Society acquired for the museum a bundle of valuable historical objects. The purchase of these cultural assets was made possible by donations from members of the Jahn Society.

The senior sports group of the TSG Freyburg (Unstrut), which was founded in the 1950s, has handed over to the museum an extensive documentation which documents its diverse activities over more than six decades.

All important information for a visit of the Jahn-Museum can be found on our homepage.

If you are still looking for a "gymnastic" Christmas present, you might find it in the museum shop:

This is the subject of the film "Die kalten Ringe" ("The Cold Rings"), which was presented by the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Gesellschaft e.V. under the leadership of its managing director Manuela Dietz and in cooperation with the Landeszentrale für politische Bildung Sachsen-Anhalt ("Saxony-Anhalt State Agency for Civic Education") and the Zentrum deutsche Sportgeschichte ("Center for German Sports History") on September 3, 2021 in the atrium of the Rotkäppchen-Mumm sparkling wine cellar in Freyburg. Thomas Grimm (author of the film), Jürgen May (Olympic participant 1964, athletics) and Christel Felgner (Olympic participant 1964, gymnastics) participated in the subsequent panel discussion. Particularly warmly welcomed among the approximately 100 guests was Felgner's former coach and today the oldest competitive gymnast in the world, Johanna Quaas. The lively discussion, in which many guests participated, was moderated by Dr. René Wiese / Center of German Sports History Berlin-Brandenburg.
In his speech, the president of the Friedrich Ludwig Jahn Society, Dr. Josef Ulfkotte, explained the historical context and paid tribute to the commitment of the men and women who, in times of great hardship and deprivation, worked for a new beginning of gymnastics, games and sports. Following up on the speech of Federal President Richard von Weizäcker, which he held in 1985 on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the liberation of Germany from National Socialist rule, he then addressed the topicality of Weizäcker's appeal to the youth: "Do not let yourself be driven into enmity and hatred against other people, against Russians or Americans, against Jews or against Turks, against alternatives or against conservatives, against black or against white. Learn to live with each other, not against each other. Let us, too, as democratically elected politicians, always take this to heart and set an example. Let us honor freedom. Let us work for peace. Let us abide by the law. Let us serve our inner standards of justice."

In addition, wreaths were traditionally laid at the Friedrich Ludwig Jahn Memorial Gymnasium and at the memorial stone for the founder of these competitions, Albert Gipp. The organizers around Werner Lauer and Steffen Fellmann of the organizer Fechtclub Leipzig e.

January 18, 2021 marked the 150th anniversary of the proclamation of the German Empire. Therefore, the AG Orte der Demokratiegeschichte organized a nationwide series of events and provided resources to help assess the ambivalent role of the Empire in German history and for German democracy, as well as to raise the sense of the complexity of the political system, society, and political culture of the Empire among a broad public.
On the occasion of the founding of the Reich, numerous publications have appeared that focus on the political, military and economic aspects of the Reich's founding period and do not take into account the role of the large social groups of gymnasts, singers and marksmen during this time. Therefore, the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Gesellschaft together with the Landeszentrale für politische Bildung Sachsen-Anhalt organized a web symposium on 23 January 2021 entitled "Des Reiches Stützen? On the political and social role of gymnasts, singers and marksmen in the era of the founding of the empire and in the empire". The contributions of the symposium are available on the internet: https://www.demokratie-geschichte.de/index.php/3396/des-reiches-stuetzen-23-jan-2021/
