Albert Baur (November 12, 1803 – October 30, 1886) was a liberal patriot and an active participant in the gymnastics movement.
In Belzig, he introduced gymnastics, swimming, and ice skating for both young and old and founded several clubs and circles.
He served as a pastor in Belzig from 1836 to 1882. His relationship with fine arts is far less known. For the first time, his sketchbook, which he kept since 1830, is being fully published here. It demonstrates his artistic confidence and his love for his adopted home, Belzig. Furthermore, studying Albert Baur provides insight into the lives and works of Berlin artists who have been unjustly forgotten, thus serving as a contribution to Berlin art history.

As „Turnvater Jahn,“ Friedrich Ludwig Jahn (1778–1852) became a German legend. Simultaneously eager for action and eccentric, he dedicated his life to the struggle against Napoleonic occupation and the idea of a German nation-state. When he opened Germany's first public gymnastics ground in Berlin's Hasenheide in 1811, no one suspected that his ideas would still resonate in sports across Europe in the 21st century.
Horst Bosetzky vividly portrays the equally contradictory and fascinating personality of Friedrich Ludwig Jahn. He skillfully chronicles his eventful life, from young rebel and pioneer of the gymnastics movement to delegate in the Frankfurt National Assembly. At the same time, the author paints an impressive panorama of that turbulent era in which national consciousness was emerging in Germany.

German and Polish sports historians view the history of gymnastics and sports of the former German province of Silesia as a shared heritage in the European House. Through eight years of joint academic research, they have succeeded in presenting the first comprehensive sports history of Silesia—from its beginnings in 1812 until the end of World War II (the German period) and further up to the collapse of the communist rule in Poland in 1989—to the interested public. The book is worth reading not only because of its content featuring numerous photographs, but also because of its politically current significance; for the authors' work is imbued with the ideals of friendship and humanism between neighbors whose populations were often driven into wars by nationalist politicians in the past.

The history of sports dates far back into Greek antiquity. While the Greek poet Pindar was still able to place athletic competition close to the divine in his Olympian Odes, this myth-laden connection was worn away and trivialized over the course of the following centuries. Today, sport has become a way of life that helps forge identity. Sport mobilizes the masses, and the values associated with it, such as fitness and beauty, have advanced to become guiding values of modern culture. Mario Leis traces the essential and most fascinating developmental stages of the phenomenon of sport from antiquity to the present.

In six major chapters, this book, written by renowned experts, guides the reader through the development of sports in Münster, from the beginnings under the Prussian provincial administration, through the era from the founding of the German Empire to the end of World War I, the Weimar Republic and the Nazi era, and the reconstruction and new beginning after 1945, right up to the immediate present. In the process, numerous previously unknown details have been brought to light that underscore Münster's significance as a city of sports. Club sports are described in as much detail as the outstanding achievements of individual athletes. From gymnastics and swimming to equestrian sports, cycling, rowing, soccer, track and field, hiking, ballooning, shooting clubs, aviation sports, and on to handball, volleyball, tennis, squash, and skateboarding events, the entire diversity of an eventful sports history is presented here. The volume is rounded out by portraits of notable athletes as well as a detailed chronicle of sporting events in the city's history. The book is illustrated with numerous, in some parts unpublished photos and documents that support the authentic impression of the work. A book that will captivate sports enthusiasts and those interested in contemporary history alike. The authors include Stefan Nielsen, Klaus Prange, and Wolfgang Weikert, among others.

Surrounded by vines, rolling hills, forests, meadows, and floodplains lies the small, romantic wine town of Freyburg on the banks of the Unstrut. High above the town, Schloss Neuenburg—the 11th-century sister castle to the Wartburg—can be seen from afar. It gave Freyburg its name, as the townspeople were allowed to settle freely and without taxes at the foot of the castle. Distinguished guests such as Emperor Barbarossa were received at Neuenburg. The poet and minnesinger Heinrich von Veldeke completed his "Eneit" here, the first verse epic in Middle High German. The wonderful coexistence of old castles, untouched nature, friendly people, and authentic vibrancy gives the town a flair reminiscent of Tuscany. The old alleyways do not look touristically glammed up, but rather quietly picturesque. Cozy inns, guesthouses, and wine taverns invite you to linger. A mild, pleasant climate and a tranquil atmosphere guarantee recreation and relaxation for every preference. The center of the old town is the market square with the town hall; closely situated behind the town hall is the town church of St. Mary. Of the old town wall, only the western section with three wall towers and the Eckstädter Gate Tower (1385) has been preserved.

The charming wine town of Freyburg captivates visitors with its wonderful location, terraced vineyards with traditional winegrowers' cottages, the Unstrut River, and its historic townscape. The 12th-century street grid featuring two-story limestone quarry houses, St. Mary's Town Church with its twin towers, the Eckstädt Gate, the town hall, and of course the Rotkäppchen sparkling wine cellars draw visitors every day. And what visitor can resist the charm of the mighty castle complex of Neuenburg? Our book includes not only the historic buildings; we also wanted to show the people who shape the town today. A town map, the history of its development, and sights in the surrounding area were, of course, a must.

As a glance at existing biographies shows, individual phases of the life of the educator Friedrich Ludwig Jahn (1778-1852), known as "Turnvater Jahn," have received little attention from researchers to date. These include the years between the unsuccessful end of his student days in Göttingen and his early years in Berlin. This collection of sources aims to shed light on these rather "dark years" by bringing together previously unpublished primary sources that provide more detailed information about Jahn and his personal environment. In addition to personal letters and documents, the edition gathers contemporary portraits of him as well as reviews of his main work "Deutsches Volksthum" published during his lifetime.

The period between Friedrich Ludwig Jahn's arrest in 1819 and his death in 1852 has so far been treated stepmotherly by biographical-historical research. This study attempts to clarify whether Jahn was indeed sidelined after his banishment from public life, after years of imprisonment and police surveillance, until his election as a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly in 1848. His role in the men's gymnastics movement of the 1840s is reflected upon critically, as is his work in the Paulskirche parliament. A chapter on the "anti-Semite" and "French-eater" Jahn opens.
