As „Turnvater Jahn,“ Friedrich Ludwig Jahn (1778–1852) became a German legend. Simultaneously eager for action and eccentric, he dedicated his life to the struggle against Napoleonic occupation and the idea of a German nation-state. When he opened Germany's first public gymnastics ground in Berlin's Hasenheide in 1811, no one suspected that his ideas would still resonate in sports across Europe in the 21st century.
Horst Bosetzky vividly portrays the equally contradictory and fascinating personality of Friedrich Ludwig Jahn. He skillfully chronicles his eventful life, from young rebel and pioneer of the gymnastics movement to delegate in the Frankfurt National Assembly. At the same time, the author paints an impressive panorama of that turbulent era in which national consciousness was emerging in Germany.

As a glance at existing biographies shows, individual phases of the life of the educator Friedrich Ludwig Jahn (1778-1852), known as "Turnvater Jahn," have received little attention from researchers to date. These include the years between the unsuccessful end of his student days in Göttingen and his early years in Berlin. This collection of sources aims to shed light on these rather "dark years" by bringing together previously unpublished primary sources that provide more detailed information about Jahn and his personal environment. In addition to personal letters and documents, the edition gathers contemporary portraits of him as well as reviews of his main work "Deutsches Volksthum" published during his lifetime.
