Surrounded by vines, rolling hills, forests, meadows, and floodplains lies the small, romantic wine town of Freyburg on the banks of the Unstrut. High above the town, Schloss Neuenburg—the 11th-century sister castle to the Wartburg—can be seen from afar. It gave Freyburg its name, as the townspeople were allowed to settle freely and without taxes at the foot of the castle. Distinguished guests such as Emperor Barbarossa were received at Neuenburg. The poet and minnesinger Heinrich von Veldeke completed his "Eneit" here, the first verse epic in Middle High German. The wonderful coexistence of old castles, untouched nature, friendly people, and authentic vibrancy gives the town a flair reminiscent of Tuscany. The old alleyways do not look touristically glammed up, but rather quietly picturesque. Cozy inns, guesthouses, and wine taverns invite you to linger. A mild, pleasant climate and a tranquil atmosphere guarantee recreation and relaxation for every preference. The center of the old town is the market square with the town hall; closely situated behind the town hall is the town church of St. Mary. Of the old town wall, only the western section with three wall towers and the Eckstädter Gate Tower (1385) has been preserved.
