Book: Freyburg an der Unstrut: A Catalogue of Historical Views from the Beginnings to 1950

14,50

Surrounded by vines, rolling hills, forests, meadows and floodplains, the small romantic wine town of Freyburg lies on the banks of the Unstrut River. High above the town, the Neuenburg, the sister castle of the Wartburg from the 11th century, can be seen from afar. Freyburg got its name from the Neuenburg, which allowed citizens to settle freely and without taxes at the foot of the castle. High guests such as Emperor Barbarossa were received at the Neuenburg. The poet and minnesinger Heinrich von Veldeke completed his “Eneit”, the first verse epic in Middle High German, here. The beautiful combination of old castles, untouched nature, friendly people and original liveliness gives the town a flair reminiscent of Tuscany. The old streets do not seem touristy dressed up, rather quietly picturesque. Cozy inns, guesthouses and wine taverns invite you to stay. A mild, pleasant climate and the quiet atmosphere guarantee rest and relaxation for everyone. The center of the old town is the market square with the town hall building; close behind the town hall is the town church St. Marien. The western part of the town wall with three wall towers and the Eckstadt gate tower (1385) is still preserved.
